This „veteran“ has been producing instrumental electronic music for quite some years under my artist name „Romerium“. How did it all start?
In my youth I was always interested in mystical and romantic soundscapes. So I loved every pop song with emotional synthesizer soundscapes in it. It all started with the Beatles, Cliff Richard, the Hollies, the Byrds, Sandy Coast, etc…later followed by Kate Bush, Chicago, Pink Floyd, America, Simon and Garfunkel, Yes, Genesis, Elo and many more.
In the 80s electronic music was also added, for example by Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Peru, etc…
Over the years my stereo set also became more and more professional and I gradually became a bit of an audiophile. In the 90s I came into contact with a few friends through my work who played vocals and guitar. They used a boss drum module and played a style like The Cure. This gothic group called „Movement“ made such an impression on me that I decided to become active in making music myself.
And once I heard the fantastic sounds that came from the Yamaha SY99, I immediately fell in love with this synth. So I bought this synthesizer and took piano lessons. That was not easy because of the irregular shifts of my work. After having filled a few boxes of floppy disks with my musical creations, I switched to the PC. At the time I started with cakewalk 3.0 (with that horrible pink color).
This was a relief, since editing note by note in the SY was a monk’s job. Over the years I expanded my PC setup, with many vsti’s from HG Fortune and Rob Papen.
The PC also evolved into a studio PC with studio monitors and I taught myself how to mix and master my work. In 2001 I discovered the associations „Alfa Centauri“ and later „E-live/E-Day“.
With my good friend Michel Bekkering I formed the band „White“ not long after. After 5 CDR productions Norman van Krimpen (alias MANORLOGIC) and Marc van Olden joined our band now called „modularwhite“. A number of CDR productions followed and „modularwhite“ still exists.
In the meantime I also made many solo albums, recently the 15th already. My music varies from ambient with new age influences via minimal/drone to berliner schule/space, and even chill/funky. Each new album has a different style of music, simply the style I feel like at that moment.
In recent years I also make albums in collaboration with other artists, such as Martin Neuhold and Thaneco. Fantasy, imagery and emotion are the components that run like a thread through my music. They are a kind of musical paintings of environments, situations, landscapes, architecture and human emotions, translated into my instrumental music.
My music is therefore not a carrier of a message or message, but expresses the emotion itself. Although this is a hobby of mine, this is the most beautiful hobby I have ever practiced in my life. And I hope to be able to continue with it for a long time.
